Quantitative Assessment of Shallow Groundwater Sustainability in North China Plain

چکیده
The depletion of shallow groundwater has seriously affected the sustainable development water resources in North China Plain (NCP). Based on 556 well monitoring observations over a period 13 years, we quantitatively evaluated sustainability NCP via various indices (e.g., reliability, resilience, vulnerability, and indices), further discussed contribution different drivers (including climatic non-climatic factors). main conclusions are summarized as follows: (1) yearly trend shows serious long-term deficit Piedmont but is not significant East-Central Plain. (2) As for NCP, reliability below medium level (reliability < 0.5) most areas ability aquifers to restore very weak (resilience 0.2), while lack storage (vulnerability 0.4). final index (<0.1) poor NCP. (3) factor dominant driver when compared factor. This result helpful formulate management policies

Assessment of Shallow Groundwater Recharge from Extreme Rainfalls in the Sanjiang Plain, Northeast China
Groundwater recharge from rainstorms can be vital for regional water resources. With the expansion of the need for more water in some specific regions under global climate change, groundwater is being pumped at a far greater rate than it can be naturally replenished. Considering that excess rainstorms could be utilized for groundwater recharge to lessen the declining tendency of regional ground...
متن کاملMitigating Groundwater Depletion in North China Plain with Cropping System that Alternate Deep and Shallow Rooted Crops
In the North China Plain, groundwater tables have been dropping at unsustainable rates of 1 m per year due to irrigation of a double cropping system of winter wheat and summer maize. To reverse the trend, we examined whether alternative crop rotations could save water. Moisture contents were measured weekly at 20 cm intervals in the top 180 cm of soil as part of a 12-year field experiment with ...
متن کاملApplication of MODFLOW and geographic information system to groundwater flow simulation in North China Plain, China
MODFLOW is a groundwater modeling program. It can be compiled and remedied according to the practical applications. Because of its structure and fixed data format, MODFLOW can be integrated with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology for water resource management. The North China Plain (NCP), which is the politic, economic and cultural center of China, is facing with water resources sh...
متن کاملLong-Term Evolution of Cones of Depression in Shallow Aquifers in the North China Plain
The North China Plain (NCP) is one of the places where the groundwater is most over-exploited in the world. Currently, our understanding on the spatiotemporal variability of the cones of depression in this region is fragmentary. This study intends to simulate the cones of depression in the shallow aquifer across the entire NCP during the whole period from 1960 to 2011. During the simulation, th...
متن کاملSimulation of groundwater dynamics in the North China Plain by coupled hydrology and agricultural models
We simulated the effects of irrigation on groundwater flow dynamics in the North China Plain by coupling the NIES Integrated Catchment-based Ecohydrology (NICE) model with DSSAT-wheat and DSSAT-maize, two agricultural models. This combined model (NICE-AGR) was applied to the Hai River catchment and the lower reach of the Yellow River (530 km wide by 840 km long) at a resolution of 5 km. It repr...
